Job Description:


The Histologic Supervisor has appropriate education, experience, and training to properly process and prepare patient result reports on specimens submitted to the Pathology section of the Laboratory. Performs procedures requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal supervision by the director. Individual will be responsible for oversight of other employees regarding work assignments and scheduling. Will monitor quality control and quality improvement activities, assist in the daily workflow, follow direction from and assist the pathologist, complete monthly reports, and update policies and procedures as needed. Will function within the accepted boundaries of laboratory practice as defined by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, as well as standards and policies accepted by Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center, and the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Will function and collaborate with other members of the health care team to provide optimum patient care. May occasionally provide care to adult, geriatric, pediatric, and adolescent patients. This description is not intended to be a complete list of duties. Other related duties may be assigned.


  • Must be technically competent to perform high complexity testing procedures and report test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently. Follows specific written procedures for specimen handling and processing, testing analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results and Proficiency Survey Testing. Maintains all equipment and instruments in the Pathology section, performs instrument calibrations, and prepares all necessary reagents and stains for tissue/specimen processing. Prepares and stains slides appropriately including H&E, Cytology PAP, all special stains, and immunohistochemistry's.
  • Maintains a filing system for all blocks and slides used for rapid retrieval, including cases referred for consultation. Prepares and order inventory of supplies and reagents for the section. Adheres to GCRMC Laboratory QI policies, and documents all QI activities and corrective actions taken when values fall out of established ranges. Patient results are not reported until corrective action is performed and documented. Observes Universal Precautions when handling patient specimens. Observes all established health and safety policies, including fire, electrical, sharps, and hazardous materials. Responsible for recognizing and reporting potential or actual patient safety hazards, and for participating in laboratory process improvement activities that reduce or eliminate risks to patient safety. Trained to consider the age of the patient when interacting with and reporting specimen results. Reports unusual patient data or results to the Laboratory Director. Assists other members of the laboratory team to complete work assignments in a timely manner. Actively participates in preparations for CAP, JCAHO, and/or CLIA inspections. Provides patient care, as appropriate to the age of the patient, in collaboration with patient, family, and health care providers, and demonstrates a commitment to professionalism in the management of patient care. Maintains a commitment to professional growth and development, and participates in education opportunities provided by GCRMC and the surrounding community. Assists in delivering quality health care services in a professional, compassionate, courteous, and cost-effective manner to all customers of GCRMC.


  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histologic Technician program OR An Associate Degree or at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college or university with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and Chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in Histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a Pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible), or an appropriately certified medical scientist OR High school graduate AND two years full time acceptable experience in Histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a Pathologist (Certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible), or an appropriately certified medical assistant. Current American Heart - HeartSaver or Basic Life Support (BLS) card. Performs related responsibilities as assigned.
