work experience as presented on the application**THIS POSITION IS
GOVERNED BY A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENTOversees and
supervises fire company(s) at assigned station that protects life
and property through firefighting, emergency medical service (EMS),
and other emergency response activities in order to meet the needs
of the residents throughout Do--a Ana County.ESSENTIAL DUTIES.
Coordinates the activities of an assigned fire company in a
designated fire district or station. Directly oversees a minimum of
three (3) firefighters assigned to a particular fire district or
station, and may oversee career and/or volunteer personnel.
Inspects assigned fire station, buildings, grounds, and facilities,
and examines firetrucks and equipment to ensure compliance with
maintenance standards. Responds to fire alarms and determines from
observation nature and extent of fire, condition of building,
danger to adjacent buildings, and source of water supply, and
directs firefighting crews accordingly. Performs fire suppression
activities, fire prevention, rescue, communications, and emergency
medical care. Responds to emergency calls to render emergency
medical care. Interacts with fire and emergency medical personnel
to assign and instruct volunteer and career personnel with
emergency assistance. Position involves substantial interpersonal
contact with both internal and external customers which must be
conducted with respect at all times. Consequences of error may
include life, injury, property, monetary loss, and inconvenience.
Compiles report of each fire call, listing location, type, probable
cause, estimated damage, and disposition utilizing personal
computer and emergency reporting software. Evaluates efficiency of
career personnel by conducting regularly scheduled performance
reviews.Conducts training for subordinates in use of equipment and
methods of extinguishing all types of fires. An employee in this
classification provides training in all aspects of suppressing and
extinguishing fires including fire prevention, performing emergency
rescues, and providing emergency medical assistance.Assists and
coordinates the maintenance and repair of county facilities,
apparatus and equipmentAid with ordering of station supplies, as
well as replenish supplies for emergency response. ADDITIONAL
DUTIES. Performs other duties as assigned.Education. High School
diploma or equivalent.Experience. Three (3) years full-time field
experience, as a career firefighter, in emergency response.
Employee must be 18 years of age as of the first day of employment.
Education / Experience substitution. As per County
Policy.Licenses/Certifications. Required at time of
application:Valid Driver's License, IFSAC certified Firefighter I
and Firefighter II; Licensed EMT-Basic; IFSAC Hazardous Materials
A/O; IS 700, 800 ICS 100, and 200; and IFSAC Fire Inspector I.
IFSAC Fire Officer I; Must obtain NM EMT licensure within six
months of hire; Must obtain NM EMT-Intermediate within two years of
hire will be required to certify at the Haz-Mat technician level;
NM Class E Driver's License or equivalent and defensive driving
course within one year and maintain Firefighter and EMT
certifications for continued employment or be subject to
dismissal.Preferred: NM Licensed EMT Intermediate; Fire Officer II;
Hazardous Materials Technician, Class E NM Driver's License;
Associate's degree in fire science or related field or 65 college
credit hours; supervisory or lead worker experience; Bilingual
(English/Spanish). Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph,
background check, driver's license record, etc.). Medical
examination, drug screen, and law enforcement background
investigation, finger printing and driver's license record.
MANDATORY DRUG AND ALCOHOL TESTING ACCORDING TO DOT
REGULATIONS.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE
POSITION: Knowledge of: Practices, procedures and equipment used in
fire suppression. Communication and interpersonal methods and
techniques to deal with the general public and County staff, which
must be conducted with courtesy and respect at all timesSupervisory
methods and techniques to effectively lead a fire companyGeneral
business inspections and fire codesAbility to: Analyze emergency
situations and to select effective courses of action, giving regard
to surrounding hazards and circumstances. Cope with stressful
situations. Learn and perform firefighting, rescue and emergency
care practices, techniques, and methods and to apply such
information to specific situations. Interpret information
accurately and make decisions according to existing laws,
regulations, and policies. Produce written documents in the English
language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence
construction, punctuation, and grammar.Work independently with
general supervision making determinations of appropriate action to
take.Make minor equipment repairs and adjustments under
supervision.Communicate effectively, speak clearly, and distinctly
with the public and employees.Successfully complete annual medical
physical according to NFPA standards and successfully complete
annual physical ability test for the appropriate assignment. Able
to drive emergency response apparatus and equipment to which
assigned. Must have the ability to wear self contained breathing
apparatus, climb ladders, work from heights, and work in confined
places, toxic atmospheres, and extreme environmental atmospheres.
Establish and maintain effective professional working
relationships.
