Telework eligible Yes as determined by agency policy- Duties Summary This position is located in the Range Management Research Unit, Jornada Experimental Range, Agricultural Research Service (ARS/USDA), Las Cruces, NM. As a Research Range Management Specialist, the incumbent plans and carries out rangeland management activities that support agency mission, goals and policy through the agency's communication platforms. . Learn more about this agency Responsibilities - Perform research to develop/produce new knowledge of ecosystem processes and new technologies for sustainable management of arid rangelands and other agroecosystems. - Develop collaborations and communicate technical information pertaining to range management with government officials, scientific/academic communities, national/international scientific organization, and diverse community and non-government groups. - Collect and analyze studies of cattle production; development of ecological site descriptions; comparative studies of the production, ecological, and socio-economic characteristics of livestock production system types across rangelands. - Prepare written work products based on research to be reviewed and/or published in professional articles, publications, and technical abstracts. Qualifications GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: - -Experience in producing range management publications as the primary author or contributor that fill in gaps in an existing theory or framework; - -Experience developing information or providing technical support to range management research projects; - -Being recognized through citation as a contributor to projects, or peer-reviewed publications and papers in the identified field of research: range management; - -Presenting information to professional societies within and outside of the organization in the area of range management. Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To be considered for this position, you must submit a one-page abstract of your MS thesis and/or Ph.D. dissertation. Also, submit a list of names, addresses, and phone numbers of persons familiar with your stature, contributions, recognition; any honors or awards received; memberships in professional or honor societies; invitations to make presentations at scientific/technical meetings; scientific society office and committee assignments; presentations (other than invitation); and publications. Education Basic Requirements GS-12 - Degree: range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows: - Range Management -- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning. - Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences -- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable. - Related Resource Management Studies -- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife and watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management. or 1. Combination of education and experience: at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Additional Requirements GS-12 In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
